Multisensory Integration Effect on Feature Binding in Visual Working Memory

The focus of this experiment is to assess the effect of spatial attention biases on access to information in perceptual and visual working memory by cuing trials using auditory, visual or audiovisual signals in change detection paradigm. Audiovisual cues elicited the strongest effect on shifting attention, being super-additive in comparison to its unimodal components, while visual cues were effective though weaker and auditory cues totally ineffective. This effect of spatial attention on performance was gradually inhibited, as the delay interval between presentation of the memory and test array increased, changing significantly between the 500ms and 1500ms mark. Results are interpreted in the context of contemporary theories of visual feature binding, multisensory integration and exogenous versus endogenous attention.
