Title: A web-based method of distributing spatial resources for free: a case study of orienteering maps

Abstract: The purpose of this project was to develop a web-based method for distributing a spatial resource for free. In order for a service like this to be effective, a way of searching for the resource and providing it must both be made available. The project uses orienteering maps as a case study of a spatial resource. The target audience of the product is not only the orienteers that use the maps, but the general public as a whole, as the study argues that by releasing the maps for free both the public and the orienteering community will benefit. A methodology is presented detailing what would be incorporated in an ideal service for achieving this. A prototype containing the major elements of this methodology has been created to demonstrate how the service will work, and highlight some of the major functions and how they were achieved. This was made using various programmes and languages including Oracle RDMS, SQL, Perl, JavaScript and HTML. The prototype service successfully provides a method of both searching for and distributing orienteering maps as the project aimed for. It also incorporates added-value to increase the prospect of the service being used. Ways in which improvements could be made and further functionality added have also been discussed. The prototype service can be found at:
