Multi Scale Visualisation of Railway Networks in Scotland

The effective visualisation of network information on small mobile devices is very challenging. The viewer wishes to see both the detail and the general layout of the network. This research explores the use of map generalisation techniques for the effective multi scale display of network data (in this case train network information for Scotland). There are two kinds of objects, which are transportation and river, can be represented as networks, so it is considered that they can be generalised in a different way other than ontological generalisation. Scotland was selected as the study area, and the approach was applied on railway objects. In a network, railway stations can be considered as nodes, while railway routes can be seen as edges. This paper proposes a network model based generalisation approach for the selection of nodes and creating of edges, and creates cartographic generalisation algorithms for removing overlaps of nodes. The number of scale in this project is four, and an application for desktop was generated to allow visualisation of generalisation as the scale is changed. The evaluation is very encouraging; however, there is much potential in the development of label positioning and user interaction functions.
