This study of adrenal cortical function in newborn infants is based upon a detailed analysis of the individual steroids found in the urine using a paper chromatographic method which has been specially devised for the purpose. A considerable amount of technical detail has been included in a review of the preliminary work which was found to be necessary before existing methods for purification of steroid extracts could be combined in an arrangement which gave satisfactory results when extracts from the urine of newborn infants were developed on final chromatograms.
