The title 'Evolution and Character of the Elizabethan IIyric' has restricted the study of the subject within certain well - defined limits..These limits have been strictly observed first in an investigation of the earliest beginning of the lyric in 7ngland, secondly in a careful analysis of the foreign influences that counted so much in its development and of the measure and proportion in which the native genius of the language and. the native tradition of poetry interacted with, and assimilated the foreign influences, thirdly in a consideration of the essential characteristics of the Elizabethan lyric proper, and lastly in a discussion of the nature of the reaction against the Elizabethan lyric tradition.
