Notes on the behaviour of Sulawesi Warty pigs (Sus celebensis) in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Abstract

The behavior of 13 groups of Sulawesi pigs was observed and filmed at a 'salt-lick' and a wallow in Northern Sulawesi, Indonesia. The group size ranged from one to six animals. In proportion to the reported population size in the region, relatively few animals were seen in comparison to the 171 groups of Babirusa which entered the site over the same period. On three occaions animals from both species were on the 'salt-lick' at the same time, and showed no sign of antagonism towards one another. One adult male Warty pig was observed apparently marking territory by rubbing the side of his head on the edge of a wallow. The area so marked was used in a similar way by an adult male Babirusa.
